My Initial Ideas For The Make-up Design Of Miss Havisham

I have sat and thought about the different stages at which we see Miss Havisham throughout the novel. I have now narrowed it down to the potential scenes I am thinking of recreating Miss Havisham in:
  • The most obvious is perhaps how she is seen throughout the majority of the film, but I would do it from when Pip first sees her - this would consist of Miss Havisham in her wedding make-up, but it would be obvious that the make-up is not fresh/sleek. It would be quite smudged and almost worn off and discoloured due to the long period of time that she has had it on for...

  • Very contrasting to the above, would be when Miss Havisham is actually burning/is burnt - this would require a lot of use of special effects and would involve her being covered in burns, blood and wounds, so would not necessarily show much of her make-up. However, I think this would potentially be difficult to recreate and considering continuity is key in this project, this may be quite difficult.

  • Another idea I had following the one above, is to show Miss Havisham when she is actually dead. I think this may be a very unique idea, but potentially could be quite interesting to show the difference between someone who is alive and someone who is not; for example, by looking at how the colour of the skin changes, and how there is no blood flow or emotion.

  • My final option that I would be interested in carrying out is actually showing Miss Havisham on her wedding day. This would mean that I would carry out bridal make-up, but it would need to be suitable to the time period, e.g. Victorian, and it would need to match Miss Havisham's age (depending on whether I decide she is quite old or fairly young). I think this could be a good design to carry out because it was not shown in any of the films, and therefore there are no outstanding ideas/perceptions of Miss Havisham in this state.
